Actually, back in the days of mag tape, I did see what the frames (6 data bits and a check bit in EBCDIC) looked like. Someone took a segment of tape and somehow developed it. Looked rather like a bar code with vertical strings of dots and dashes instead of vetical bars.

Reminds me of the time someone asked Admiral Grace Murray Hopper how big a nanosecond was. She took a length of twine, measured off a few inches, and said, "An electron travels about this far in one nanosecond." Very impressive.
