The application in question is browser-based and does not follow any recognized UI paradigm that I'm familiar with. Here's sort of what it's like:
I have a list of devices. For each device, there is a list of configurations that can be applied to a device at a scheduled time. When you right-click one of the configurations, the "Set as Default" menu item appears. If you select it, the configuration item appears in the list with the word Default appended to it. Each of the several devices can have multiple configurations, one of which might or might not be set to default for the device.
To make it more complicated, you can also specify None as a default, which is probably what they're trying to get to with "Unset". There is a place to set the default config to NONE, but it is in a part of the interface that is very restricted and likely not available to people using the part that contains the "Unset" menu.
I did look at the Set as Default printer paradigm, and it should work, except that most users have no way to designate None if they don't want any of the configurations to be default. It's not insignificant, because the configuration changes which ports on a switch pass traffic.
What is needed is a way to clear a setting as default without setting anything else as default. So, in this context, an "unset" is needed. I just don't want to call it that. I suppose I could ask the developers to list "none" as one of the configuration options. That would make it clear what you are setting.
