I always use Windows Character Map... when I'm setting up a new machine it's one of the first things that gets added to my Quick Launch toolbar. But for the special characters I use frequently, I built a small table that shows theirALT+#### commands, PDF'd it and it's also added to my Quick Launch toolbar.
