I think it depends on where the password is:
- O/S passwords can usually be removed by Safe Mode. UNIX/Linux
passwords are even easier: if you can boot up in single user mode you
are automatically considered the "root" user
- BIOS passwords require a jumper reset.
- HDD encryption passwords cannot be removed. You may be able to hire
a service for $100 to brute force remove the password, but
preservation of data is not guaranteed. It may be cheaper to buy a new
HDD.
