I have had the same problem with Save as PDF, though.

I always suspected that Acrobat couldn't tolerate a bottom margin
narrower than 1 inch, as that seemed to be the problem.

Thanks! I was using the Adobe plug-in for Word. Save As a pdf worked
perfectly.

I still wonder why, but at least I have a way to circumvent the issue.
