Apology accepted. No hard feelings.  And my point is that a certification program such as you propound would backfire. Not could - would. As I expressed earlier, it would make the hiring decisions even more mechanical, and employers would be even less likely to give any consideration to anything but who has the "right" string of alphabets behind the name.  You must admit there is such a probability, unless the ruling hierarchy of the STC has embraced the idea that the law of unintended consequences does not apply to them or their actions. And that probability is significant, as its magnitude is determined by the motives of hiring deciders, a group of people who have a vested interest in making the hiring decisions as quick, easy, and robotic as possible.  The hiring process in too many cases has, over the years, degenerated into something that is already too impersonal; it would be counterproductive for us to do something that would accelerate the
rate of decay.

Good luck to us all no matter what our feelings on this issue. Over the next few years we're gonna need it.

I apologize, Keith. You did not accuse anyone of immoral or unethical behavior. What you actually wrote was:

"I'm not an STC member and I owe them nothing, so what moral, ethical, or philosophical principle gives them the right to insert themselves between me and a possible job?"

My point remains. We are not inserting ourselves between you, or anyone else, and a possible job. Certification is an opportunity to IMPROVE your chances of getting a job. It is moral and ethical for you to avail yourself of this opportunity, as it is moral and ethical for STC to offer it.
