The double-space rule I was taught is two spaces after all punctuation 
that ends a sentence and after colons.

This reminds me of when I was learning to write in kindergarten.  I was 
taught to use one finger space between words, two fingers between 
sentences, and three fingers to indent a paragraph.  I also learned that 
if my "o's" did not touch the line and I filled in the gap with my 
crayon, then when the boy next to me copies my little cheat, he gets 
whacked with a ruler.
