The gigs I see posted primarily call for the following:

- MS Office
(the suite, including Visio. Semi-*mastery* of Word will serve you very,
very well.)
- InDesign, Framemaker
(Both of which you can quickly learn with the 30-day trial and a copy of
*<product> Classroom in a Book*.)
- Photoshop (although I use the open-source GIMP on my present job)
- HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Dreamweaver
(Dreamweaver is the design front-end of choice, but one should know HTML
to fix aspects of the GUI. CSS is a piece of cake and makes designing web
pages much easier.)
- DITA and XML
- TechSmith's Camtasia and SnagIt (the latter being for easily-editable
screen captures.)
- Source control, such as Documentum
- RoboHelp and similar tools (although I'm seeing far fewer calls for
that these days)

I'd get more gigs in the SF Bay Area if I knew how to document APIs.
