Another small reason to consider the certificate or degree:

Coming out of a recession, some very large and very famous
(Fortune-100) companies behave differently from smaller companies.
First, they'll begin hiring interns (which means you've gotta be going
to a college which participates in internship programs). Then they'll
ramp up hiring of new college graduates. Strict policies bar the
hiring of anyone who is not a recent graduate. From the hiring
manager's standpoint, the ideal candidate is one who has experience,
but has gone back to school.

This approach allows companies to systematically reduce the average
age (and average salary) of their workforce, while crowing about
"bringing fresh ideas and fresh faces into the company" and claiming
to support good causes like education. And they can do it without
running afoul of age discrimination statutes.

On the other hand, such big companies make up a small and shrinking
segment of the employment market.
