I haven't seen the data on trends in tech writing. But anecdotally, it
seems to me that the choice between contracting and full-time
employment is a function of the TW's personality as much as it is of the
industry sector. Geography probably plays a strong role, too.

I do think we are getting closer to a definition of the people who will
most benefit from having this certification, as well as where the people
who developed the criteria for this certification work.

There are certain industry sectors, namely software, internet commerce
and other computer-related products, that seem to me to be trending
toward a state in which contractors who jump around from one gig to
another and one technology and type of deliverable to another may
eventually be the only types of tech writers there are.
