Sorry if I missed it in your original post, but which part of the process do you want to automate? When I was using Help&Manual (which uses well-formed XML under the covers), I created a script and batch file that created several versions of the documentation, branded with three different brands, in PDF and HTML format automatically every night. I could have had the script created many more differently branded versions had I wanted to.

Subject: Looking for a document solution - part 2
Thanks to everyone at TECHWR-L for all your help and ideas... Nice to know that I now have another term to add to the mix: document automation, document assembly and now database publishing!
We've looked at solutions using a 'drag and drop' approach to DITA-based, XML document that would output items in PDF (which we need now) but also in other formats that we will use in the future (Android, tablet etc.) but my boss is really stuck on the idea of automating the whole process by selecting options to compile a document. I originally looked at FrameMaker, PatternStream and other smaller applications such as Intelledox and ActiveDocs but maybe I better look at them again.
