Thanks to everyone at TECHWR-L for all your help and ideas... Nice to know that I now have another term to add to the mix: document automation, document assembly and now database publishing!

We've looked at solutions using a 'drag and drop' approach to DITA-based, XML document that would output items in PDF (which we need now) but also in other formats that we will use in the future (Android, tablet etc.) but my boss is really stuck on the idea of automating the whole process by selecting options to compile a document. I originally looked at FrameMaker, PatternStream and other smaller applications such as Intelledox and ActiveDocs but maybe I better look at them again.
