I was confused by these terms until I learned that something that is inflammable can go up in flams just as easily as something that is flammable. I prefer to conserve characters: flammable.

A gas station attendant once asked me the difference between inflammable and flammable.

I told him "flammable" means "can explode and kill you. Horribly."

He then wanted to know whether mysterious tanks labeled "inflammable" could not explode.

I told him they could still, indeed, blow up.

I then beat a hasty retreat.

The station subsequently was closed for years.

We were asked what was preferred. I provided both what I like and what I actually use. I prefer inflammable but write flammable.

This isn't about personal preferences, but rather about established

Granted, Sun's style guide may differ from that of M$ or Apple, just
as the *Chicago Manual of Style* and the AP style guide are sometimes
at odds. The point is to write to a known standard, rather than
letting personal preference dictate.
