John Allred asked: Do clients ever give any recruiters exclusive status? Or, do they keep their own search going and merely augment their pool from candidates recruiters supply? I understand it's to my financial advantage to get a direct hire. I'm just wondering if clients reward recruiters they have an established relationship with.

John:
Some large companies still have exclusive contracts with agencies, and I think that is one of the things behind the trend for large agencies becoming recruitment/placement conglomerates that can meet all their client companies' hiring needs, from warehouse workers to executives. Other companies have a very varied range of talent acquisition policies and plans. Some post internally and on their own sites for a specified time before calling in recruiters to spread a wider net for them. And because of some of the recent IRS rulings about "captive consultants" that are not-quite-employees, but do not work for anyone else, some companies insist that all outsouuced workers be paid through a specified agency.
Because of the diversity in company approaches to contract hiring, I think we all have to run our own job search, using every resource we can find. Use recruiters, use online job boards and email alerts, and network with everyone you know or meet and let them know about your job search. Also be aware of the differences in actual compensation you will receive on a W2 vs a 1099 contract, and price your services accordingly.
