The Quick Mask tool depends a lot on the brush you use. Solid areas
need to be 100% opacity. I like the feathered edge. My graphic design
friends prefer the hard edge.

Other designers use the Magic Wand tool, but it only operates as a
selection. One wrong click and it's gone.


The best way that I found to perform a knockout is to use the Pen tool
and draw an editable shape around the object. From there, you can
create a selection, leave the edges hard, or feather it (as I like),
and test your knockout. If you need more refinements, edit the shape
and try it again.
