Rebar (reinforcement bar) is usually imbedded in cement to increase the
overall strength of poured cement walls or floors. Piles are larger iron
products that are driven into the ground to ensure no movement of the
supported structure. This is in the US, and there are different products and
construction techniques used in different areas of the country. For example,
building on permafrost in northern Alaska is far different than building on
wetlands in Florida or along the Gulf Coast, or building in the Southwestern
Deserts. Without a picture, it is impossible to determine if you are talking
about a form of rebar or small pilings. Is there a construction forum where
you can pose this question (they'll probably need a picture too)?
