I think that's a rather silly and limiting list. Mathematical comfort (if
not proficiency) will be highly useful in many technical writing jobs. From what I know, most of the occupations that require post-secondary education that are on that list involve highly competitive grades to enter, and some do require at least a minimum level of post-algebra mathematics.

Kids - don't listen to that article! (But thanks for posting it, Craig, to stimulate discussion.)

Whenever I have the chance, I suggest to kids that they learn mathematics.

I give them my math inventory test: "What's 6 x 9?"

Scoring:
A - "54"
B - "Um, ahh, ummm, 54."
C - "Oh, I'm not good at math." (Fiddles with fingers. Time passes.) "Ahhh, 54?"
F - Anything else, such as 47, or "I'll use a calculator."

Every tech writer should get that "A". There's no excuse.

According to legend, many of the tech writers at SAS (a company that makes statistical software) have PhDs in statistics. The person who wrote that article did not sample the TW field adequately.
