Helen Oboyle asked for a Word to describe an empty check box
"Our internal standard is to format our description of UI check boxes as:
"If selected, blah. If cleared, blah."
CLEARED? My mind silently screams in pain whenever I have to read this, to
say nothing of when I have to write it. It's probably not a grammatical
error, but to my ears it is such an unconventional usage (at best) that I
cringe....Does anyone out there use "cleared" to describe the state of a
check box?
If not, what terminology do you use instead?"

Helen:
I cringe at "cleared", too. I'm not too thrilled to use "selected" several
times in a feature description, either. I prefer "checked" and "unchecked".
I use instructions like, "Click the whatsis checkbox to select it. If you do
not want an item selected, click its checkbox to deselect it". OR " Each
type of alert can be Enabled or not, depending on whether the Enabled
checkbox for that item is checked. Items not enabled are not active in the
given policy." HTH
