Some 15-20 years ago I heard a talk by Saul Carliner. I've never forgotten what he told us as we eagerly sat to learn about marketing communications from him:

"Folks, I can tell you are an eager group and bright. Just a reality check. Don't forget that 2/3 of the world will never hear about your product, couldn't afford it if they did, and couldn't care less about what you are doing."

Sometimes we take ourselves way too seriously... and I've often remembered that lesson over the years. It helps me focus on what is REALLY important in my life, personally and at work. In the end, what lasts are the relationships we build.

Seems rather OT for a subject on technical communication, but sometimes we focus so much on the "technical" aspect that we forget that at the end of the day, communication is what is important.
