Re: Writing vs. Editing
I have to admit (reluctantly) that I prefer to edit the work of others. It gives me immediate feedback about how much better I am at using language than most people.
(Unfortunately, when compared to most professional writers, I suspect I'm only average.)
I'm currently doing editing of a friend's fiction, as a favor. It's a real pain, because in spite of his neat but crazy ideas, he really cannot write. His personal style includes his MS Wrod typography, all of which I stripped out, including his Unusual CAPITALIZATION For Emphasis. Because he used spell-correction, there are occasional incorrectly spilled words of which I thank he war totally underwear.
Editing is usually easy for me unless it involves editing my own writing. How do I know I can't edit my stuff? I've seen the result of a top-notch editor's work on my material: "Why don't you put this sentence at the beginning of the first paragraph?" (Gosh, wow, you're right! Never woulda thunkit!)
