In the past I've had the same problem. I've had technical writer builds on my computers but I recently converted to engineering build. With that build I have all of the regular Office 2010 applications plus it's a 64-bit machine. The 64-bits seems to help. I also have a 64-bit personal lap top using Office 365 and that seems to stop most of the crashes.

At the office, Visio is the culprit. It will not shut down normally, no matter what.

As for word, I use PNG graphics, I don't draw tables but insert, and I don't do anything complicated with styles or macros. If I do anything fancy, it is for very small documents. Styles are kept to a minimum

Because of various changes at my company, I may be moving from FrameMaker
to Word.

The documents I handle run into the hundreds of pages. I've never handled a
Word doc over 80 pages that didn't regularly crash or corrupt.

I'm looking for people who have successfully handled very large documents
in Word. I need to pick your brains to find out how you do it. I'm a
moderately experienced user of Word, but I'm by no means a power user. If
this move is made, I'm going to need a lot more information.
