There are lots of people not in your company's official HR or management channels who can talk about you and your work. Former co-workers and product managers, especially ones who no longer work for your former company, are good people to cultivate. Whenever someone you've worked closely and well with leaves for another company, you should exchange contact info, establish yourselves as potential references for each other and then continue to stay in touch. Don't wait until you actually need references to go looking for them.
