Dan Comly suggested I adjust my monitor contrast/brightness settings. Lo
and behold, I now see all those items I was missing!

As Tony suggested, there might be something off about my monitor, too.

Many, many thanks to all who thought about this. I've never had to adjust
my monitor before, so had no idea how to approach the problem.
