When doing copy/paste you can set up in options with cut,copy,and paste in advanced. You can set up how to copy and paste from one doc to another.
Also, I found page numbering an issue. What was said earlier about page breaks is an issue. This link might help you understand some of the number problems that can happen and also give you an idea about page breaks.

If you are bringing in content via cut and paste, it may well be coming in as an HTML paste, especially if you're getting stuff from web pages. This is a recipe for hairpulling and misery. I would suggest using Paste Special and selecting some other form of paste - RTF often works well. As Margaret suggests, the extra section breaks can be causing strange behavior. Possibly something in the HTML code of the source is turning into spurious secton breaks.
