In the coding business a problem like that immediately suggests a need for "refactoring".

I'd walk backwards out of there until I could explain it to my grandmother.

Following on from the coding example, I would examine other parts of the same document for similar difficulties. As A. P. Ershov of Novosibirsk wrote, so many years ago, "Finding errors in a program is like finding mushrooms in the forest. Having found one, look for others in the same place."
