Thanks for the interesting history! I still run into SGML here and there, usually in aerospace companies, always old installations that live on.

And as of HTML5, the SGML connection has officially been cut:

Oh you fresh kids! SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) came out of
Goldfarb, Mosher, and Lorie's (G, M, & L.) efforts in the sixties at IBM to
develop a means of sharing machine-readable large-project documents in
government, law, and industry. It worked real well but only the government
(mostly aerospace and defense contractors) had big enough, long-lived enough
projects to justify implementing it.

Even then (maybe even more so then) documentation efforts were managed on the
quick-and-dirty basis. DocBook-SGML and Framemaker-SGML were both great tools
but never took off - I remember that I even had a GML program that ran on an
AMIGA -- all the futuristic nuts in one box, eh?. But, one has to wonder if
Boeing wishes they had a set of SGML docs for 737 right now.

HTML and XML are both simply document-type declarations within the SGML
standard. Simplified but better suited for the q-and-d work. If you knew SGML,
then you'll surely understand HTML and anything before or since.

Say what? Ventural Publisher came out in 1986. HTML was not published
until 1995.
