RE the statement that you could never treat FrameMaker markup the way you can treat Ventura markup...
Maker used to support MML... Maker Markup Language. It was a super-minified approach to MIF. You can still find a PDF manual for version 5. The book is 38 pages, including two appendices (an example and a list of error messages) and an index (remember those?). I think they stopped support at tables. You could specify a template in MML, and you could pour MML-ified content into that template.Â

I actually got onto reproducing MML via the API, with updates to include tables and other constructs that came after -- I thought it would be quite useful. Tedious work, but not too difficult. But then I just switched over to DITA, which is a standardized approach to the same problem. Being standardized, it provides a broader solution IMO.
