I have to echo the comments on the increasing cost of professional development.
In the past, I was able to apportion and stretch travel money (always in short
supply), attending at least two conferences each year. (This was in a previous
life as a Benefits Manager) As a documentation specialist and technical writer,
I find it more difficult to keep up with industry changes and to create and
nurture networks of sources by meeting face-to-face with peers because of the
higher costs.

For me, the solution has been audio and video tapes of conferences, printed
copies of proceedings, and satellite down-links. Will any of these avenues
be available for *vicarious* attendance at the STC Conference? Will *virtual*
attendance be possible via sattelite link or electronic media? It seems to me
that here is an area where our advances in technology could provide a low-cost
path to professional development.

Obviously, I am unable to attend due to severe shortness of wealth...
