I've used a few alternatives to avoid the problem of having users think they
are to type a period or comma that is included within quotes:
1) Set the material to be typed in a different typeface and eliminate the
quotes altogether.
2) Set the material to be typed on a line by itself (in the same or another
typeface).
3) Use single quotes instead of double quotes. The confusing inconsistencies
that surround the use of double quotes and end punctuation do not
exist for single quotes.
I think all of these alternatives have the advantage of improving clarity
anway. Are there any other alternatives out there?
