A simple, non-technical analogy for LaVonna Funkhouser's boss would be
a comparison to the telephone. If "all the information you need can
be found within this department," that's like saying you can do your
job without the use of a phone.
Relying on contact with others in your company (outside your department)
for information is like having telephones installed. What a breakthrough
to be able to talk to anyone in the company or the whole city without
having to go to their office, store, or home. But you're still limited
to a 20-mile radius.
Now along comes access to Internet. Suddenly you and everyone in your
company has the electronic equivalent of long-distance telephone
service! If your boss thinks you're able to do business without the
telephone or at least long distance service, LaVonna, then you probably
can still get along without Internet access. Most of the rest of us
cannot, which may put your department or company at a considerable
competitive disadvantage.
