University Fellowship in Writing Education
The Department of applied linguistics, College of Liberal Arts, University of
Trondheim, announces a PhD student fellowship. This is a position meant to give
promissing research recruits the opportunity to qualify for a position as
Associate Professor through completion of a doctorate degree.
The fellow would be placed in the interdisciplinary group around the project
"Development of writing competence". The work of this group is described in a
series of reports which can be obtained from the project coordinator (see
below).
The fellow's work is meant to develop new competence in the field of scientific
writing in university/college environments. This applied field comprises work
on two main problematics:
- how is written language competence developed in scientific genres?
- which factors (including instruction) further the development of
such competence?
A comprehensive project description has been written for the field of com-
puter supported writing. The applicant's project can take as its starting
point portions of this project description or be an independent project.
The department is working to strengthen its competence in women's studies/
studies of gender. In selecting among the applicants it will be counted as
favourable if they have worked with or have plans to develop a gender-
analysis perspective within their research.

Additional information from me personally:
PhD fellows here would have a completed MA and some research experience. They
would have a strong grade average. The final selection is based mainly on
their project proposals, which should be 5-10 pages, should have a clear state-
ment of the research problem, should give a brief overview of earlier research
relevant to the problem, and finally must have a well worked-out do-able
methodological design for the normative timespan of a PhD project (3 years).
Fellowships involve some teaching responsibilities, and therefore are
usually extended to 4 years. The pay is approx. Norwegian crowns 170 000.-
per year (approx 25 000 US dollars at current exchange rates). Because some
teaching as well as participation in an ongoing interdisciplinary project
would be involved, applicants fluent in a Scandinavian language will probably
be preferred, although the rules for PhD theses here highly recommend writing
in English and most Norwegian academics are fairly fluent in English.
