Here are a few sources that might be helpful to you on the document design side:
The Aldus Guide to Basic Design
Design Principles for Desktop Publishers, Lichty
Guidelines for Document Designers, Felker et al.

The Aldus Guide to Basic Design is published by the Aldus Corporation that is
intended to be a basic guide for document design, not a commercial for the
Aldus Corporation and its products. It succeeds quite nicely.

The texts range from $7.00 to $20.00 at the bookstore. All of them can be found
at your local university (or in some cases public) library.
