While we are one the subject of pet peeves, one of mine is the use of
"that" and "which" to refer to people. I hear television news-people make
this mistake all the time.
"The man that bit the dog was held for observation."
According the the Associated Press Stylebook (my favorite for obscure style
questions), "who" and "whom" are for references to "human beings and to
animals with a name". ...interesting way to classify animals...
