The moment may have passed, but I was just notified this message was
bounced. I'll try once more to post, and then give up. If the bounce notice
was in error and I'm duplicating myself, my apologies.

Steve Fouts asserts:
>I don't think you're up to speed on just what the Power PC is. It is a

>With native PowerPC software it is as nearly as fast, as fast, or faster
>(depending on who you read) as a Pentium based PC.

Benchmarks show PowerPC 50% faster at the same clock speed doing floating
point operations than a Pentium, and about 3-5% slower doing integer
operations. These are industry-standard benchmarks (SPECmarks). Anything
else is sales talk.

Wrong. It emulates a 68020-based Mac at speeds comparable to today's 040
based machines. This means the system doesn't do FP co-processor
instructions (as the 040's have built in) which is meaningless in practice
because it emulates the standard math routines faster than the 040's FP
co-processor executes. And it means the PowerMacs don't emulate the memory
management feature of the 030's.

This is a quibble for the sake of accuracy, as the net effect is a computer
that's an equal to the 040 based ones.

Have Fun,
Arlen
