The references I automatically supply with my resume have always been checked.
I think, that, as someone said, even if managers are prevented by policy from
giving out too much information, if they liked you, they'll manage to squeeze
in something...Even a tone of voice can tell a lot.

I was surprised to read Kristie Guiney's note about people asking for "peer"
references, because that's what I was going to suggest to Doug...Sometimes
peers know more about what you're doing than managers, unfortunately.
