From the "Read Me First" file that came with some mapping software:

Three new features have been added that are not covered in the manual:

a. ... When this option is checked, the multiple symbol for a
particular point will be the same as the symbol for the points
contained within it if all the points that make up the multiple
have the same symbol.

Well, I'm glad they decided to document this feature somewhere...I think.
The scary thing is that I have read this enough times (and worked with the
software) that it makes nearly perfect sense to me now.
