Susan Benjamin to keynote
Fall 1994 STC Region 6 Technical Communication Conference
October 21-22, Bettendorf, Iowa

Susan Benjamin, founder of Words at Work, will provide the
opening address for the 3rd Annual STC Region 6 Technical
Communication Conference.

Although based in Boston, Words at Work offers express editing
via fax to clients from any geographical area; executives,
managers, entrepreneurs, or professionals facing a deadline
crunch can fax their letters, reports, proposals, or articles to
Words at Work (617-338-8954) and receive an edited version of
their document by fax within 24 hours. As Words at Work has
grown, Ms. Benjamin has employed a growing network of independent
consultants, all connected via fax.

In her keynote address, Ms. Benjamin will examine why writing
today is a greater challenge than ever before, discuss the
contemporary reader's mentality, and examine the fundamentals of
technical writing. To support her claims she will rely upon her
experience as a writer, consultant, and professor as well as upon
numerous texts (Patricia Ficociello's The Eyes of Janus and
Colleen Donnelly's Linguistics for Writers to name but two).

In addition to serving as an editor, manager, and entrepreneur,
Ms. Benjamin is a professor, trainer, and author.

Ms. Benjamin is an Associate Professor of Literature and Writing
at Berklee College of Music. She previously taught at Emerson
College and Katharine Gibbs School.

Ms. Benjamin has provided training in writing, editing, and
publishing for students, employees, managers, and faculty. Her
clientele has included a number of diverse organizations, such as
Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, the Bermuda Employers
Council, and the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.

A former journalist, Ms. Benjamin has demonstrated a wealth of
writing interests. She has published in the Mississippi Review,
Oxford Magazine, and the Eclectic Literary Forum. Currently, she
is completing two mysteries (The Catland Club and Death at the
Highland Hotel) and a how-to on writing (Unlearning High School).

In addition she wrote a book on letter writing (which includes a
diskette containing more than 250 sample letters) for the
Spinnaker Software Company.
