Holding books open without using one's hands is a problem.
Sally Marquigny suggested using the book weight, which is a fine means
for doing the job. However, the weight does cover parts of both
facing pages, and so must be moved at least once before being removed
completely so that the page can be turned.
The object I've found most useful for holding books open is a
clear plastic clipboard. The clipboard is transparent, so once
it's on top of the book, you can read both facing pages without
having to re-adjust.
