Regarding RoMay Sitze's and Lise Hansen's comments about teaching technical
communication:

I find this thread very interesting. I posted a question about this
exact topic in the comp.human-factors group. I called it "Teaching the
User Point of View". That started a good discussion about usability and
communication. It's amazing how similar the two discussions are. As
Technical Communicators, you may not realize how intertwined the fields
of TC and Human Factors/Usability are. I read both groups - you'd be
amazed at the similarities !
