Well, I'm at the other end of the pole on this one!
To me there are many ways to explain something clearly.
In choosing a way, I want to know as much about the people who will be using
the document as I possible can.

Personaly, I've never found "audience awareness" to be useful. If I'm
not clearly explaining the material to begin with, then being aware of
my audience isn't going to help. I am not aware of this audience. I
simply try to communicate.
