I normally have several from-home-type contracts going. The worst case I
had was earlier this year, when I had six jobs going; I subcontracted
some of the work to get it done. Two or three is ideal; it's enough work
to keep me busy, I can usually get things to work out so that I'm
working on one while another is in for review, and I can keep track of
what's going on.

Last year, I tried doing on-site work while maintaining some of my other
clients, but it was a disaster (IMO, though my clients didn't seem to
notice). It's near impossible to keep in touch with clients, set up
meetings, and so on, when you're on-site during normal business hours.
Fortunately, the on-site contract was cut short (it was supposed to last
eight months, but because of major project and organizational changes,
it was cut to three months). I now refuse to take on-site work. My bread-
and-butter is all of my "little" projects.

Hope this answers your questions!
