I'm forwarding an announcement for two positions we are trying to
fill.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Forte Software, Inc. in Oakland, California has two openings for technical
writers: one permanent position and one contract position.

The permanent position is for a senior writer, who can take
responsibility for two or three of our manuals. We need someone
with strong writing skills, who either has experience writing for
programmers or experience in computer programming. The
candidate should also be independent and resourceful; writing at
Forte is a very research-intensive experience.

The contract position is for a help writer. For this position, we
require previous experience building help systems. We need
assistance with the technical aspects of building multiplatform help
source files from FrameMaker documents.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
I have worked at Forte for two months, and I am including the following
information as background, to answer some of the most commonly-asked
questions.

NOTE: I am NOT speaking as an official representative of Forte.

WHAT'S FORTE?
Forte Software, Inc. is a four-year-old company in Oakland, CA whose
product, also called Forte, was first released in 1994. The Forte
product is an object-oriented, client-server, application development
environment, which enables application developers to write portable
code for the graphical user interface, database access, and services.
Forte supports clients running on Windows 3.1, Windows NT, Motif,
and MacIntosh. Server environments include various UNIX platforms,
Windows NT and VMS, and databases include Oracle, Sybase, and others.
We also support a variety of network protocols.

The Forte product has received very positive reviews from several industry
magazines, including UNIXReview (Outstanding Product 94 for Advanced
Application Development Environment) and PCWeek (Best Products
of the Year).

THE DOCUMENTATION GROUP
The documentation group currently has a team of
six people, including three writers, one graphic designer/desktop
publisher, one desktop publisher/system administrator, and one
sample applications programmer. We use FrameMaker to write the
books. We will also be writing online help for future releases.
We work with about 40 software engineers.

A PERSONAL OBSERVATION
The technical writers here need to be both technical and good writers, because
we don't produce "naive end user" documentation; our users are programmers
and system administrators. Having some programming experience and some
knowledge of object-oriented concepts will make learning Forte a lot easier,
but you can pick up this knowledge as you go.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you want more informal information, you can send
me a note at lautz -at- forte -dot- com, and I'll try to answer your questions.

If you would like to apply for one of these positions, please send a
resume, cover letter, and writing samples to:

Forte Software, Inc.
Fifteenth Floor
1800 Harrison St.
Oakland, CA 94612
Attn: Documentation Manager

We return all writing samples.

Thanks,

Jennifer Lautz
