Sorry to burst your bubble, James, but I am a dual Canadian-US citizen, and
have worked in both countries in technical (engineering and technical
writing) and non-technical (social services delivery) fields.

I have always heard # called the pound sign.

The answer, again, is IT DEPENDS!
