The electron beams within the picture tube are deflected by magnetic fields.
There is one weak field that exist at about every place you can put your
monitor: The earth's magnetic field. It really can deflect the electron beams,
mostly influencing color purity.

NEC is kind enough to say, which direction of electromagnetic field they have
during adjustment of the monitor.
