even asking "are you hung up?" can have other negative connotations. "Is
your computer hung up?" can be confusing in this day of integral modems and
connectivity. How about "Is your computer working?" or is that cheating.

There *is* no dignified way to express this. Picture yourself
on a network with your co-workers, and your own computer
terminal or workstation fails to respond. Then see yourself
going from cubicle to cubicle asking "Are you hung?"
