For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Part of what we do as technical communicators is to forecast methods of
delivering information, and then adapt to them. In order to educate
technical communicators for the demands of the 21st century, it is vital
that educational institutions do this. That prompts two questions:
1. Is your company (or college or university) currently involved in
activities that can be grouped under the admittedly broad category
of distance learning? These would include methods of delivering
education and training to customers offsite through some technological
medium (video, multimedia, internet, etc.)
2. If the answer to question 1 is "yes," what methods do you currently
use for delivery?
3. If the answer to question 1 is "no," are you considering moving into
distance learning; and if so, what methodologies are you considering?
