As womebody else pointed out there are plenty of words like X-ray and A-bomb
that keep the hyphen. I don't think it's to do with capitalisation. As I
noted somewhere, there is the further problem that "email" e (acute, no
hyphen) is French for enamel and the word is used in English by the antique
trade.

The hyphen doesn't harm those familiar with the topic and can prevent
misunderstandings for those who aren't.
