In a recent exchange about salaries for advertised TW jobs,
a job in Virginia was compared with the going rates in
Silicon Valley. This all brings me to a question I've had
for a few weeks.

A long while back, someone pointed out a handy Relocation
Salary Calculator at http://www.homefair.com/homefair/cmr/salcalc.html.

If you've ever used it or something similar AND if you have
relocated from one state to another,

1. Do you find the calculator to be accurate?

2. More specifically, do you find that the cost of living
(COL) actually changes that much from area to area?

3. Have you ever taken a MAJOR cut or gotten a HUGE increase
because you relocated to a drastically different area?

For example, if this calculator is accurate, my salary is about
$70,000 in San Francisco dollars. My true salary dollar amount
is not nearly that impressive. If I translate my salary to Dallas, TX
dollars, then I get about $9,000 above my current salary.

I have several reasons for asking these questions about COL, such as
the need to figure out where I really fit in the STC salary survey.

Also, if we can establish whether *we* think this calculator is
reliable, then perhaps we can start comparing apples to apples.
