To pick nits, my example would read:
"It is conventional to use a .eps file name extension for a graphics
image file saved in EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) format."
-- or --
"It is conventional to use a .txt file name extension for a file
saved in ASCII format."
i.e. I include the <dot> when referring to a file name extension, but
I do not include a <dot> as part of the acronym for a file format,
such as EPS, GIF, RTF, etc.
