Open Text 5 search and retrieval tool and Web products


Liora Alschuler, SGML consultant and author of the recently released book
"ABCD... SGML," will talk about how SGML-based tools work with other
types of technology in an integrated environment with special attention
paid to workflow processes and how they are affected by SGML coded data.
This talk is illustrated by case studies and set within a conceptual
framework.

Larry Posner of Open Text will demonstrate the Open Text 5 search and
retrieval tool as well as some of their new Web products. Open Text was
one of the pioneers in SGML-aware search tools, building their first product
to support the revision of the Oxford English Dictionary in the early
1980's. The Open Text 5 search engine is embedded in many popular Web sites
today,the most popular being Yahoo.


UPCOMING PROGRAMS

At the May 29th General Meeting, Sanford Bingham of Magnetic Press
will discuss SGML and Adobe's PDF format. Does SGML have any advantages
when the target output is Acrobat? Mr. Bingham may have some surprises for
you.

For the vendor portion of the meeting, Adobe will show their new
FrameMaker +SGML release.

At the June 18th General Meeting, John Cole of John O. Cole
Associates, a consultant in multimedia and electronic publishing, will talk
about Internet and Web publishing. What roles can SGML play in this new
environment? John will discuss his experiences and give you his ideas.

David Silverman from Innodata will discuss his company's products and
services.


In September, the Forum will be holding an all-day expo which will cover
not only SGML, but a broad range of topics and technologies vital to
making sense of your options and opportunities in today's electronic
publishing environment.

The Forum has changed its meeting attendance policy. Members will be
admitted for free as usual, including those from organizations with
corporate memberships. Non-members will be asked to pay a $5.00 fee at
the door to cover meeting expenses. You can register and pay for
membership at the door if you wish. For the remainder of this year (four
meetings, ending with the June meeting), you may join the Forum for a
reduced $20.00 fee. Renewals for the Forum `96/'97 season will be sent
out in August/September.


ABOUT THE FORUM

The SGML Forum of New York is a nonprofit organization devoted to the
exchange of ideas and information about SGML. Organized primarily as a
user group, the Forum seeks to promote an understanding of the scope and
benefits of the SGML standard and to further its practical application
within a variety of industries, including publishing, financial services,
insurance, pharmaceuticals, and telecommunications. Membership in the
Forum is not required for attendance.
